Sanibel at a glance
Sanibel incorporated as a city in 1974, largely so residents could control growth on the island. Much of it is set aside as wildlife habitat, including the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, and it's reached by the Sanibel Causeway across San Carlos Bay.
The city runs its own building department at City Hall on Dunlop Road, so dock and lift permits on the island go through Sanibel rather than Lee County.
What Sanibel boat lifts look like
Boat lifts on Sanibel are mostly on bay-side canals and along Pine Island Sound, serving homes that are often second residences. Many lifts sit unused for months, which lets cables corrode in place and switch boxes collect moisture.
Hurricane Ian's surge damaged a lot of island docks, and repairs and replacements continued for years after.

Which office handles Sanibel lift permits
Sanibel issues its own building permits through the City of Sanibel Building Department at City Hall. New or replacement lifts and dock work are permitted by the city.
The office to call is City of Sanibel Building Department at City Hall, 800 Dunlop Rd., Sanibel, FL 33957, (239) 472-3700.
Most repair visits need no permit. Installing a new lift is different: building offices commonly want plans showing the lift, its capacity and how it ties to the dock or seawall, plus any electrical work. Ask your contractor to pull the permit in their name.
