New Lift Installation: what it involves
Replacing a boat lift is a construction project, not a repair. The contractor sizes the lift to the boat's weight with fuel, gear and water on board, checks that the pilings and dock can carry it, confirms the canal depth and clearances, and pulls the building permit for the parcel. Electric lifts also need power at the dock, which may mean new wiring and an electrical permit.
Common reasons to replace rather than repair: beams or cradle badly corroded or bent, a lift too small for a new or heavier boat, pilings that have failed, or storm damage that leaves the frame twisted. Used lifts are sometimes an option; Cape Coral, for example, asks owners installing a used lift to sign a hold harmless agreement. A written estimate should list the lift make and capacity, motor brand, cables, bunks, removal of the old lift, electrical work and the permit.
Signs it's time for a new lift
- Beams, cradle or brackets are heavily corroded or bent
- Your boat is heavier than the lift's rated capacity
- Pilings are leaning, cracked or loose
- The lift was damaged by a storm surge or debris
- Repairs keep stacking up on an older lift

Free EstimateCommon methods
Sizing and site check
The contractor weighs the boat's real weight against lift capacity and checks pilings, dock and canal depth.
Permitted installation
The lift is installed under a building permit, with electrical work permitted where required, then inspected.
Removal and setup
The old lift is removed, the new one is set up with cables, bunks and motors, and the boat is fitted and tested.
Does a new lift need a permit?
Yes. New and replacement boat lifts need a building permit in every Lee and Charlotte jurisdiction we serve. Cape Coral requires permits and a city inspection for docks and boat lifts. Lee County requires building permits for dock and shoreline structures, including lifts, in unincorporated areas. Charlotte County uses a residential dock and boat lift permit and requires an electrical permit for all lifts. Your contractor should pull the permit in their name.

What a new boat lift costs
Boatzon's 2026 guide, citing Angi, puts the average boat lift at about $8,000, with most between $2,000 and $20,000 depending on type and capacity. Large high-capacity lifts, canopies and new pilings cost more. See the full cost guide.

New Lift Installation questions
How long does a lift permit take?
It varies by office and season. Your contractor should give you an expected timeline on the proposal.
Can a new lift go on my old pilings?
Sometimes. The contractor has to confirm the pilings are sound and rated for the new lift's load.
Can I install a used lift?
Some offices allow it. Cape Coral, for example, asks for a hold harmless agreement for used lifts. Ask your contractor.
