Boat lift prices cover a wide range because a lift is a small machine sitting over salt water: a capacitor and a new 4-post lift are both “lift work.” The figures below are published reference ranges, not quotes, and they’re national guides rather than Southwest Florida surveys. Use them to sanity-check an estimate, then get a written price from a licensed local technician who has seen your lift.

Reference figures, not quotes. HomeAdvisor, boat dock repair cost: boat lift repairs about $175–$500, around $340 on average. Boatzon, boat lift cost in 2026: citing Angi, a new boat lift averages about $8,000, with most between $2,000 and $20,000. Checked November 2026. Canopy figures: Boatzon, boat lift cost in 2026.

What pushes a price up

  • High-capacity lifts: bigger motors, gearboxes and cables cost more
  • Access: a lift reachable only from the water, or a long dock run, adds labor
  • Storm or flood damage that touches several parts at once
  • Parts for older or discontinued lift brands
  • New wiring, a new circuit or a GFCI upgrade, which usually adds an electrical permit
  • Permits, engineering and new pilings on a replacement lift

What keeps it down

Catching problems early. A frayed cable replaced on schedule costs far less than a cable that snaps under load and drops a boat onto the cradle or into the water. A yearly service that checks cables, pulleys, gearbox oil, switches and bunks before hurricane season is the cheapest insurance most owners can buy. Rinsing motors and switch boxes with fresh water and keeping their covers on helps too.

How to read a quote

A good written estimate names the parts by brand and size, separates parts from labor, says whether the old parts or lift will be hauled away, and states whether any permit is included. For a replacement lift, it should list the capacity, the type of lift, what happens to the old pilings, and who pulls the building and electrical permits. Ask how long the parts and the labor are warranted, and check the contractor’s license on the Florida DBPR license search before you sign.

Insurance after a storm

Some homeowners and boat policies cover lift damage from a named storm or lightning, and some don’t. Take photos before anything is moved, keep the damaged parts, and get the technician’s diagnosis in writing. That paperwork matters more to an adjuster than a verbal description.

Boat lift cost questions

Why do lift repair quotes vary so much?

The same symptom can have very different causes. A humming motor might need a capacitor or a whole motor and gearbox. Lift capacity, brand, access from land or water, and whether parts are in stock all move the price.

Is a service call charged separately?

Many technicians charge a trip or diagnostic fee, and some credit it toward the repair. Ask before the visit.

Does a new lift price include the permit?

It should. Ask whether the quote includes the building permit, any electrical permit, the electrical work itself and removal of the old lift.

Can I save by buying parts online?

Sometimes, but a wrong motor, gearbox or cable size costs more in the end. Many technicians won't warranty parts they didn't supply.
